New Year's Resolutions

Ready to make a New Year's Resolution you'll actually stick with this year?  On average only about 20% of us keep our New Year's resolutions, and unfortunately some of the biggest failures are found in fitness resolutions.  But don't let the statistics get you down!  West Loop Chiropractic has some great tips for turning your health and wellness goals for 2011 into reality.

1. Choose something attainable.  Not all of us are going to look like supermodels, so maybe you shouldn't set that standard as your goal.  Instead, aim for something you can achieve - you'll be less likely to quit if you're realistic.

2. Be specific.  Saying you want to be healthier it too vague.  Instead, make it your goal to be healthier by committing to quit smoking, scheduling regular chiropractic adjustments, or planning to eat more fresh produce and less fried, greasy foods.

3. Create an action plan.  Put your goals to work by breaking them down into smaller, more manageable chunks and give yourself a timeline for completing each smaller piece of your ultimate goal.  It may also help to schedule your workouts, adjustments, and any other necessary steps just as you would any other meeting or appointment to make sure they remain a priority.

4. Ask for help.  Teaming up with a friend or family member not only will offer extra support but may also help you stay on track and follow through with your resolutions this year.  It's also a great idea to ask a professional, like Dr. Rosen, Dr. A.J., or Dr. Neumann.  Research studies have shown that assistance from a professional greatly improves people's success rate.

5. Reward yourself!  Acknowledge your success as you accomplish those mini milestones along the way - it will help to keep you motivated and working towards your dreams.  A great way to celebrate success is with a massage at West Loop Chiropractic - especially after a particularly strenuous training session or exercise class.

6. Write it down.  Talking about your resolutions is a great start, but putting it in writing can make it more of an obligation or "contract" and something you're less likely to forget about once February rolls around.  Also, be sure to keep your list someplace safe and visible so it actually can serve as a reminder.

7. Give it time.  Most experts agree that it takes about 21 days to create a habit and six months for it to actually become a part of your daily life.  Have patience and stick to your goals - you can do it!

From all of us at West Loop Chiropractic, have a safe and happy New Year's!  Cheers!

Indulge with a Balanced Holiday

Are you drinking enough water?

Staying properly hydrated is incredibly important to your overall health and wellness.  Men should try to consume roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women should aim for 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.  Carrying a water bottle or keeping a glass of water at your desk can help to ensure you reach these daily guidelines.
West Loop Chiropractic uses a reverse osmosis water filtration system.  Curious why or how it works?  Click here to find out:

Keep yourself healthy with plenty of pure water and regular chiropractic adjustments.  Get in before the holiday weekend - call or email to schedule your next appointment now!

Fight Cold and Flu Season Naturally

As seasons change some people appear to have an endless number of coughs, colds, and runny noses.  These are often explained as a normal part of the winter season, but are these constant infections "normal"?
Chiropractic care is directed at ensuring the nervous system is balanced and operating effectively, which in turn may have a significant effect on how well our immune system is working.  Though chiropractic does not cure the common cold, it can help raise your natural resistance to disease by removing a serious interference to your proper body function: subluxations.  If you or your child suffer from constant coughs, colds, and sore throats, you know you should be seeing your chiropractor on a more regular basis.  It may reduce the number of colds your child has, which means less days off school or work and a reduced cost on other medication or medical doctor visits.
Call or email West Loop Chiropractic today to keep yourself and your children healthy all winter long - 312.850.2225 or adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com.
Be well!

Health Benefits of Tea

Not only will a cup of hot tea help warm you up from our frigid weather, but it can also hold some wonderful health benefits.

Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard University recently published new data indicating that tea contains a component that can help the body ward off infection and disease and that drinking tea may strengthen the immune system.  The researchers identified a substance in tea, L-theanine, which primes the immune system in fighting infection, bacteria, viruses and fungi. A subsequent human clinical trial showed that certain immune cells of participants who drank five cups of Black Tea a day for two to four weeks secreted up to four times more interferon, an important part of the body’s immune defense, than at baseline. Consumption of the same amount of coffee for the same duration had no effect on interferon levels. According to the authors, this study suggests that drinking Black Tea provides the body’s immune system with natural resistance to microbial infection.  For more on how tea may help you, go to http://www.teausa.com/general/teaandhealth/218g.cfm#immune or speak with the staff of West Loop Chiropractic.

Stay well and keep your immune system strong this winter!

What is NSRT?

Have you heard the latest in allergy elimination technology?  It's called Neurological Stress Reduction Therapy or NSRT and the results are AMAZING!  One of West Loop Chiropractic's NSRT clients says: "I haven't noticed my usual sinus and respiratory symptoms around my cats!!!"
NSRT provides a novel and unique approach to wellness that is based on proven, accepted science, allowing patients who generally have very few if any treatment options to finally enjoy symptomatic relief.  BioVeda’s BAX system, already in use at Chicago's West Loop Chiropractic office located at 1000 W. Washington Blvd., is based on the idea that by reducing or eliminating the body’s stress reaction to environmental factors using a combination of Meridian and Energy Stress Assessment (MESA), laser therapy, nutritional supplements and homeopathic medications, one will experience symptomatic relief.
Ready to start the new year free from allergies and sensitivities?  Make a resolution you'll actually keep and call or email West Loop Chiropractic TODAY to schedule your complimentary initial NSRT consultation - 312.850.2225 or adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com

Beat the Holiday Stress

Even though Thanksgiving is still a few weeks away, the holidays will soon be upon us and you know what that can mean - stress!  Don't let the chaos of the season get the best of you - let West Loop Chiropractic help you finish out the year healthy, happy, and relaxed.  Try these easy steps to help keep holiday stress at bay:

*Say cheese!:  It may sound corny (or should I say cheesy) but studies have shown that smiling activates the pleasure center in your brain, making you feel calmer and happier instantly!

*Sneak in a quickie workout: Just ten minutes of something as simple as jumping rope will not only help  burn off the extra calories we consume during this time of the year, but also works your arms, chest, abs, legs, and butt.  Furthermore, research shows that interval workouts actually burn more calories than steady cardio. Be sure to get in some jump rope before that extra slice of pie!

*Stretch: Sit with your back straight.  Interlace your fingers and place them on the back of your head.  Tilt your head down, pressing your chin gently towards your chest.  You should feel an easy stretch on the back of your neck.  This stretch also helps lengthen your spine and relieves tension.

*Be well adjusted:  Don't let your chiropractic care take a back seat over the next few weeks - make time to visit your chiropractor regularly.  To schedule your next appointment or your new patient exam, call or email today - adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com or 312.850.2225

Benefits of Massage

Most people tend to think of massage as a frill - a luxury - an indulgence.  However, research shows that regular massage can do much more than simply help you to feel more relaxed or pampered.  It can also significantly decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol, while simultaneously increasing the number of lymphocytes, white blood cells that are a part of your body's natural immune system.

Massage and chiropractic adjustments are extremely complimentary.  West Loop Chiropractic is happy to announce that we have recently expanded the number of massage appointments we can accommodate, making it even easier for you to being reaping the combined benefits of massage therapy and chiropractic adjustments.  West Loop Chiropractic's massage therapists are all fully-licenced, clinically trained professionals.  You will be amazed by your results!

Sweet Surprises

Lower your risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes by following these simple steps:

*A recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health found that having a daily dose of peanut butter may help ward off Type 2 diabetes.  Just one tablespoon of peanut butter eaten at least five times per week can reduce your risk by 30%.  Try it on a whole-wheat English muffin, apple, or banana!

*Consume more fresh fruits and vegetables - one study found a 22% lower incidence of diabetes among people who do.

*Avoid processed, prepackaged snacks.

*Eat at least two servings per week of brown rice and you'll lower your risk by 11% compared to those who ate less of this healthy grain.  Additionally, brown rice will help you to feel fuller and more satisfied.  Make a healthy stir fry and add lots of veggies!

*Try a seasonal pumpkin yogurt parfait.  Preliminary research from China indicates that pumpkin extract may help to regulate blood sugar, as well as offering protective benefits to the pancreas.  Just mix 1 cup of fat-free vanilla yogurt of 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree.  Top it off with some sliced almonds or a bit of granola.

*Take care of your overall health and wellness by getting regularly checked by a chiropractor.  Call or email the professionals at West Loop Chiropractic today to schedule your new patient exam.  312.850.2225 or adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com

Family Dinner Ideas

It's just about dinnertime and, if you're like a lot of parents, you may be dreading the nightly battle to get your children to eat more fruits and veggies.  You may even be guilty yourself of skimping on the recommended 5 to 9 daily servings.  Well here are some no-fail strategies to help you meet this mealtime challenge.

1. Don't single out veggies.  A whole pile of broccoli won't look too appealing to most kids, so instead work them into dishes such as soups and sandwiches.

2. Keep it visible.  You'll be more likely to choose a piece of fruit as a snack if it is out on the counter or near the front of your fridge.

3. Involve your kids in the preparation of the meal.  They'll be much more likely to eat the foods they've helped create plus you get to enjoy some quality family time!

4. Get some at every meal, every day.  Add a banana or berries to your cereal, bulk up lunch with a salad, and make it a vegetable lasagna instead of meat.  Simple alterations and additions will ensure you get enough servings of fruit and veggies every day.

5. Try something new.  Be adventurous and explore your produce aisle - variety is the key to sticking to a healthy diet.

Instill good habits that will last a lifetime.  For more recommendations and assistance in making your family the healthiest on the block, speak with the doctors of West Loop Chiropractic.  Email or call us today to schedule your family's new patient exams - 312.850.2225 or adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com

Sneak Peek at October's Featured Product

Could a little vitamin D mean a lot less flu this season?

A recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that 1200 IU/day of vitamin D helps prevent seasonal influenza A in schoolchildren.  Of those supplemented, only 10.8% developed the flu, versus the 18.6% who were not supplemented and developed influenza - that's nearly a 50% greater risk without proper supplementation!

Help keep your kids healthy and safe this year by giving them vitamin D supplements.  West Loop Chiropractic recommends an easy to use spray - Mercola Advanced Nutrition Sunshine Mist, a vitamin D spray with Ultra Absorption and Nanotechnology - available for purchase at our office.  Its patented delivery system maximizes absorption into your circulatory system.

Pick up a bottle today and stay well this cold and flu season!

Official Announcement

Doctor Michael Rosen and Doctor Ashley Neumann are excited to announce the expansion and grand re-opening of West Loop Chiropractic.  The official event is open to the public and will be held Thursday, September 23 from 5-7 p.m.  West Loop Chiropractic will be providing office tours, live music, and refreshments.

A recipient of Integrity Management’s prestigious Five Star Quality Service Award, West Loop Chiropractic is located at 1000 W. Washington Blvd. and is open Monday through Saturday.

Integrity Management’s CEO, Keith Maule, remarked, “West Loop Chiropractic [is] a great example to look to for quality care.”

In addition to their award winning facilities, Dr. Rosen and Dr. Neumann are members of the American Chiropractic Association, the Illinois Chiropractic Society, and the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.

Dr. Rosen said that while chiropractic care is the foundation of this practice, they also provide other services such as nutrition, wellness care, allergy elimination, pregnancy care, children, sports care, and rehabilitation.  “A lot of people suffer needlessly from back pain, headaches and other ailments,” he said. “That’s why I encourage the public to visit a doctor of chiropractic to find out if chiropractic care can benefit them.”

West Loop Chiropractic is currently accepting new patients. To learn if chiropractic treatment can benefit your overall health, call the staff of West Loop Chiropractic today at (312) 850-2225 or email adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com and schedule a new patient exam.

How to Add More Fruits & Vegetables to Your Diet

Fruits and vegetables contain essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases.  Do you wish you were eating more fruits and vegetables but aren't sure how to work them into your daily routine?  Here are some easy tips from www.fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov:

  • Add fruit to your breakfast cereal or oatmeal (not just bananas, but also try apples, grapes, berries, peaches, or mandarin oranges).
  • Snack on mini-carrots or dried fruit at work instead of candy.
  • Add to your take-out dinner with fruits and vegetables from home.
  • Microwave a vegetable to add to your dinner or eat some fruit for dessert.
For more information on the nutritional benefits fruits and veggies can have on your health, talk to the experts at West Loop Chiropractic - 312.850.2225, www.westloopchiropractic.com, and follow us on Twitter: @westloopchiro

Brain Exercises for All

Just like exercise is good for our bodies, the same is true for the brain.  Help your brain get in shape, be strengthened, and develop with "exercise" and regular use by following these suggestions.

*Do Neurobics*
A term for mental exercises with are used to increase the range of mental motion by activating different parts of the brain.  Any exercising of the brain may help stave off brain degeneration and, in many cases, reverse memory loss and improve mental agility.

*Have Fun!*
We all are more willing to participate in something fun, rather than something that is just beneficial.  Sudoku is a perfect brain game because it requires discerning, deciphering, and decoding while still being challenging and compelling.  Crossword and jigsaw puzzles are other great options for working out your brain and are still beneficial and entertaining.

*Switch it Up*
Wearing your watch on the other arm or brushing your teeth with the opposite hand can stimulate the brain by causing it to do mundane activities differently.

As with any muscle or organ, if you don't use it, it won't perform at it's optimal level.  Research published in the Journal of Neuroscience in 2008 revealed that if a neuron doesn't receive sufficient stimulation through active synapses, it will eventually die.  Don't let that happen - exercise your brain today!

Back-to-School Lunches

As parents begin the back-to-school rush of shopping for school clothes and school supplies many will forget one of the most important necessities for the school year – a healthy lunch.
It’s common knowledge that the school cafeteria has become just another franchise; foods aren’t healthy and well-balanced. Vending machines offer chips, cookies, sodas and all kinds of other junk foods that children shouldn’t be eating. This creates a challenge to parents that many have decided to ignore.
Accepting that it’s a lost cause many parents have rationalized that the rest of their children’s meals are healthy and nutritious so they can be lax regarding lunch. This is a misconception, considering what is being served in the majority of school cafeterias.
What’s being served?
Although programs have begun to appear over the past few years addressing the problem, the fact is that not much has changed. The majority of entrees served on school campuses include pizza, Sloppy Joes, cheeseburgers, spaghetti, hotdogs and corn dogs.
It’s rare that you will see anything made with fish and chicken; unless it’s fish sticks and chicken nuggets, which contain processed meat that is breaded and deep fried. This is not nutritious. Unfortunately it’s time to accept the fact that raising healthier children means they won’t be eating school lunches, but instead will need to be provided lunch from home.
Perfect Packing
Part of putting together a healthy packed lunch is having the right storage containers. Be sure to use an insulated lunch box that will hold up to four small food containers and a thermos.
When purchasing the containers you should buy at least two sets; this will help you to avoid having to wash them each night. As for the thermos, be sure that it is the wide mouth variety; this will be necessary if you wish to use it for beans or soup.
The Beverage
When it comes to healthy lunches, milk, juice and soda should be avoided at all cost. The American Academy
of Pediatrics says that juice consumption is contributing to cavities and gastrointestinal issues for children while milk has proven to be a common food allergen.
Your best option is to encourage your child to drink water. This can be done by providing water for them in their lunch box using a stainless steel thermos or by placing ice cubes in their thermos in the morning. By lunch time they will have begun to melt and, in the meantime, they have helped to keep the other items in the lunch box nice and cold.
The Entrée
Great sources of protein that can be put in a small lunch container are cubes of baked chicken, turkey or fish. This does not include processed meat that you
buy at your grocery store; but should be prepared at home and cut into bite sized pieces. Remember that you can freeze these in small portions and use them randomly over several weeks.
A hard boiled egg is also a great source of protein. And don’t forget that wide mouthed thermos you purchased; beans are an excellent source of protein and can be served in a thermos with organic tortilla chips for dipping. Alternatives to beans can include meat or vegetarian chili or stew.
The Traditional Sandwich
Commonly found in the packed lunch is a sandwich; the problem is that bad choices can be made here as well. White bread bought at the store contains bleached flour. And don’t be fooled by the word “enriched”, as adding back a portion of the vitamins removed during the bleaching process doesn’t undo the damage.
Better sandwich choices include whole wheat bread with a lot of grains, and almond butter instead of peanut butter. Also, be creative. Try to put vegetables into a sandwich as much as possible.
Another great sandwich option is a healthy wrap. This can be done by purchasing whole grain tortillas and wrapping up healthier protein and vegetable sources.
For instance, baked turkey or chicken with lettuce, cucumbers, sprouts, red peppers – maybe even some beans sprinkled inside make a tasty protein.
The Side Dishes
Most children don’t consider a meal as lunch unless there are chips and cookies. These must be avoided at all cost. The best side dish choices for your children should be tasty cut vegetables; remember that greener is better.
Fruit is also a great side dish, but while it is healthy, it is also a source of sugar and not as rich in vitamins and minerals as vegetables. Serve fruit just once for every five servings of vegetables. Remember that it should be fresh, organically grown fruit; fruit roll-ups are not fruit.
Also invite your child to help you prepare vegetable soup or vegetarian chili. These can be put in a thermos and taken to school over the span of a week.
Consider putting together a grain salad. This can include couscous or steamed long grain brown rice with chopped cucumbers, red peppers, baby carrots, or any other similar vegetable. You may also choose to marinate the chopped vegetables in a salad dressing for a few days prior to preparing the salad. Drain the vegetables and then mix them in. This will add moisture to the salad without having to add excess dressing.
Going Organic
Organically grown foods are slightly more expensive but worth it. The price of providing foods that are free of pesticides, growth hormones, hydrogenated oils and artificial additives and preservatives is high.
It’s important to note that organic foods are also more filling. By providing your child with smaller portions of healthier foods you’ll be spending the same amount of money without providing them with the cheaper foods. These cheaper foods are not just less expensive, but they lack nutrition. You’re paying less but you’re getting less in return.
Create a Menu
No one knows better than your own child what they’re going to eat, so let them help you prepare their lunches. Remember that if they like what their eating they will bring home an empty lunchbox.
The best way to accomplish this is to insure that their options are only healthy choices but with variety. This can be made easy by creating a mix-and-match menu. Using a white board, poster board or similar display, draw out five columns and label them for each day of the week.
Then using color-coded post-it notes, index cards or by printing on colored paper, create a square for each lunch option. For example, their protein options would be on blue, vegetables would be on green and fruits would be on yellow.
Every Sunday, let your child help you prepare their menu by picking the appropriate cards and placing them in the column for each day. You and your child can then begin prepackaging those options that can be frozen or stored for a few days.
In Summary
It’s important that your children like their lunches but it’s more important that their bodies get the vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need to develop and grow properly. A balanced diet is more than just a healthy recommendation it is the building blocks of your child’s growing and developing body.

Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure Experience

This past weekend I walked 60 miles over 3 days to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research and education. This is my second year walking, but my first year receiving chiropractic treatment after each day of the walk. The vast difference in not only how I felt while walking, but also in my recovery is amazing.

A very special thank you goes to the medical volunteers from National University - especially our very own intern, Fayaz, who provided expert chiropractic care to myself and all the walkers during this event.

Drug of the Month: YAZ

YAZ is this month's Chiropractic Leadership Alliance drug of the month. Check out these highlights from their article.

"YAZ® (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) Tablets:

YAZ is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use an oral contraceptive. YAZ is also indicated for the treatment of symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who choose to use an oral contraceptive as their method of contraception. The effectiveness of YAZ for PMDD when used for more than three menstrual cycles has not been evaluated.

YAZ is indicated for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age, who have no known contraindications to oral contraceptive therapy and have achieved menarche. YAZ should be used for the treatment of acne only if the patient desires an oral contraceptive for birth control. YAZ has not been evaluated for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

YAZ contains 3 mg of the progestin drospirenone that has antimineralocorticoid activity, including the potential for hyperkalemia in high-risk patients, comparable to a 25 mg dose of spironolactone. YAZ should not be used in patients with conditions that predispose to hyperkalemia (i.e. renal insufficiency, hepatic dysfunction and adrenal insufficiency). Women receiving daily, long-term treatment for chronic conditions or diseases with medications that may increase serum potassium should have their serum potassium level checked during the first treatment cycle. Medications that may increase serum potassium include ACE inhibitors, angiotensin – II receptor antagonists, potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplementation, heparin, aldosterone antagonists, and NSAIDS.

The use of oral contraceptives is associated with increased risks of several serious conditions including venous and arterial thrombotic and thromboembolic events (such as myocardial infarction, thromboembolism, stroke), hepatic neoplasia, gallbladder disease, and hypertension. The risk of serious morbidity or mortality is very small in healthy women without underlying risk factors. The risk of morbidity and mortality increases significantly in the presence of other underlying risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemias, obesity and diabetes."

Real Storytime

Here at West Loop Chiropractic we are able to help people feel better and live healthier lives. For some, that may mean feeling more energetic, sleeping more soundly, or experiencing less symptomatic pain and discomfort (such as headaches or back pain).

One recent patient who we'll call F.N. came to us about 3 months ago with intense tingling and numbness down her right arm. It was disruptive to her sleep and nothing she was doing on her own seemed to help. After only a few adjustments she noticed a huge difference - most importantly that she was able to sleep through the night! Now she is on the path towards wellness and doing wonderfully.

Another patient who has been coming regularly for the past two years, M.P., came to us originally complaining of neck pain and tension headaches. He was also on several asthma medications. Today he rarely experiences headaches, has virtually no neck pain, and only has an emergency inhaler for his asthma.

Call us today and let us help you attain your own health goals. 312-850-2225

Is your body sending you a message?

"Text messaging, video gaming, surfing the Internet - with technology comes repetitive behaviors and body positioning that can have dramatic health consequences, not the least of which is a condition known as forward head posture. Just think about it: hours on end with your head down, neck scrunched, staring at a tiny phone, iPod or other device...Your body is sending you a message - it's time to answer it before you end up in pain." -Dr. Dean Fishman, to your Health magazine (July 2010)

Some fast facts on Forward Head Posture (F.H.P.):

1. Can lead to long-term muscle strain, disc herniations, and pinched nerves.

2. Recent studies point to a correlation between F.H.P. and a decrease in respiratory muscle strength.

3. Every inch of F.H.P. can increase the weight of the head on the spine by 10 pounds.

4. Can lead to early arthritis.

5. F.H.P. can cause your brain to steal energy away from your thinking, metabolism, and immune function in an effort to compensate for abnormal gravity/posture relationships and processing.

Get yourself checked out today - call 312-850-2225 to schedule your exam.

More information on F.H.P. and Dr. Fishman's article can be found in the July 2010 issue of to your Health magazine. Visit www.toyourhealth.com for more on this and other important chiropractic studies.

Childhood Stress?

We don’t typically associate childhood with stress. Children don’t have bills to pay, demanding jobs or kids of their own to worry over, so why would children possibly be stressed? This may be how we think, but the sad fact is that children today are being diagnosed with high-anxiety, depression and a myriad of other psychological disorders resulting in more children being on psychosomatic drugs now than ever.
Bullying
There was a time when playground bullying was probably the worst source of stress that we could imagine for our children. Someone at school was making their little lives miserable and it was usually a child who was bigger, meaner, tougher, etc. Today we have a whole new arena for bullying. With internet social networking sites so popular, they have opened a door for children to be bullied 24/7, instead of just the seven or eight hours a day that they’re at school.
Recent studies have reported that bullying is affecting more than 1/3 of all school-age children and that more than 160,000 children will miss at least one day of school because of this. Most children reported a fear of speaking to an adult about the bullying out of fear of repercussions or the abuse escalating, so the cycle of stress is never broken.
Hyper-Parenting
Unfortunately another cause of stress for children comes from a surprising source: the parent. We all want what’s best for our kids, like a bright and successful future, but sometimes in our zeal we forget to allow time for them to be children.
If we over-schedule them with organized sports, dance classes, music lessons and self-improvement programs we don’t leave them time to be children. We convince ourselves that it’s best to keep kids busy but we forget that boredom is a catalyst for creativity.
Many children who have been over-scheduled grow to resent the attention placed on their lives and begin to wonder what’s wrong with them. They question why they need so much improvement and refinement, then retreat into a shell of insecurity, finding escape in video games and internet surfing. We lose the child in the pursuit of perfection.
Critical Self-Image
More typical of girls, the time between elementary school and junior high finds young women becoming more critical of their looks. Studies have found that 50% of 13 to 15-year-olds believe that they are overweight and 80% of 13-year-old girls have dieted at least once. Is it any wonder then that young girls are suffering from eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia nervosa? Additional studies have shown that 85% of anorexia patients developed this disorder in their teens.
Fractured Families
Another source of stress for children is the fractured family. Unfortunately, whether we like or not, the divorce rate is high and when children are involved the
collateral damage is greater. Recent studies have concluded that children of divorced parents are statistically more likely to have their own marriages end in divorce.
While every effort is made to help children not place the blame on themselves for the divorce and to teach children healthy ways to resolve issues, the anger between the parents will still sometimes be transferred to the children, increasing their anxiety.
The Serious Outcome
Children today are responding to emotional stressors in ways that we can’t imagine and generally don’t understand. Recent studies have shown that over 10% of all teenagers are self-mutilating, and of this number, 64% are "cutting". Despite the appearance, self-mutilation is not a precursor to suicide but, according to the young people who will talk about it, "the only thing that makes [them] feel better."

Condition of the Month: Little League Elbow

“Little League Elbow” is a throwing injury to the elbow commonly found among pre-teen and early-teenagers that play baseball or softball competitively. Injury occurs when the repetitive throwing creates an excessively strong pull on elbow tendons and ligaments. This can tear ligament and tendon away from the bone. Sometimes small fragments of bone are pulled away as well. The elbow can also become compressed, causing bones to rub together. Young athletes are particularly prone to this type of injury because their bones are immature. A child should stop throwing at the first sign of elbow pain, restricted range of elbow motion or locking of the elbow joint. Young pitchers are also advised against trying to throw a curve ball. The additional twisting motion used to make a pitch "break" is very hard on the immature elbow.
The age groups most affected are pre-high school players, anywhere from ages 10 to 15, with the peak incidence in the 12 to 14-year-old age group. Treatment and recovery depend on the severity of the injury. Recovery time ranges from 6 weeks to 3 months.
Treatment may include:
CHIROPRACTIC & PHYSICAL THERAPY
RESTDo not pitch or do any activities that cause elbow pain. Do not play sports, especially throwing sports, until the pain is gone.
COLDApply ice or a cold pack to the outside of the elbow for 15-20 minutes, 4 times a day, for several days. Wrap the ice or cold pack in a towel. Do not apply the ice directly to your skin.
