Family Dinner Ideas

It's just about dinnertime and, if you're like a lot of parents, you may be dreading the nightly battle to get your children to eat more fruits and veggies.  You may even be guilty yourself of skimping on the recommended 5 to 9 daily servings.  Well here are some no-fail strategies to help you meet this mealtime challenge.

1. Don't single out veggies.  A whole pile of broccoli won't look too appealing to most kids, so instead work them into dishes such as soups and sandwiches.

2. Keep it visible.  You'll be more likely to choose a piece of fruit as a snack if it is out on the counter or near the front of your fridge.

3. Involve your kids in the preparation of the meal.  They'll be much more likely to eat the foods they've helped create plus you get to enjoy some quality family time!

4. Get some at every meal, every day.  Add a banana or berries to your cereal, bulk up lunch with a salad, and make it a vegetable lasagna instead of meat.  Simple alterations and additions will ensure you get enough servings of fruit and veggies every day.

5. Try something new.  Be adventurous and explore your produce aisle - variety is the key to sticking to a healthy diet.
