Prevent Text Neck
Americans sent 110 billion text messages in December 2008, according to the Census Bureau. As technology advances, allowing us to do more tasks on smaller equipment, our bodies often pay the price. With a growing potential for injuries from technologies that we rely on, it’s important to minimize the risks. One problem that is becoming more prevalent is neck strain from the over-use of mobile devices, or “text neck.”
The best way to avoid text neck is to limit the use of your mobile device. If you need to send a longer e-mail, wait until you have access to a computer or consider calling the person rather than texting.
What Causes Text Neck?
Text neck is caused by poor posture when using a mobile device. It’s all too common to become hunched over with your head drooping forward and your shoulders rounded as you become engrossed in your messaging or games. How to Avoid Text Neck
| • Sit up straight with your chest out and your shoulders back. • Bring your arms up in front of your eyes so that you don’t need to look down to see the screen. • Tuck your chin into your chest to look down rather than dropping your head forward. • If you must use your mobile device for lengthy typing, invest in an external keyboard. • Rest your forearms on a pillow while typing to help minimize neck tension. • Avoid using mobile devices while in bright sunlight. Straining to see the screen leads to jutting the chin for ward, shifting work from the spine to the muscles that hold up the head. |
Stretches for Frequent Texters
| • Hand stretch. Start with your hands in a fist and stretch your fingers out as wide as they’ll go and then return to a first. Shoot for about ten stretches with each hand. For added resistance you can stretch a rubber band around your fingers. • Squeeze a stress ball. Do this for approximately 30 seconds for each hand. • Chest stretch. To counteract the hunched posture of texting, stand up straight with your arms down at your sides. Turn your forearms until your thumbs are pointing at the wall behind you. |

Natural Allergy Prevention
Allergies are relatively common. Both genetics and environmental factors play a role.
The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. But in a person with allergies, the immune response is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen, it releases chemicals such as histamines which fight off the allergen. This causes itching, swelling, mucus production, muscle spasms, hives, rashes, and other symptoms, which vary from person to person.
Common allergens include pollen, mold, pet dander, and dust. Food and drug allergies are common. Allergic reactions can also be caused by insect bites, jewelry, cosmetics, spices, and other substances.
West Loop Chiropractic has the technology to help you live without the stress of allergies and the constant use of medications to control symptoms.
We offer chiropractic care that helps balance you body and nervous system to control reactions to allergens. Adjustments help your body adapt to the stresses of our environment.
Neurological stress reduction therapy uses acupuncture points and low level light therapy to reduce our body’s reaction to stresses we encounter. This system uses light to stimulate acupuncture points along with homeopathic remedies to help your nervous system function optimally.
If you or someone you know suffers from allergies don’t hesitate to ask for more information on how we can help stop the itchy, watery eyes and runny nose. If you have questions call and set up a consultation with the doctor. As always, consultations with our doctors are complimentary. Call 312-850-2225 today to schedule or visit our website at www.westloopchiropractic.com to find more information.

Power of Protein
You may already know the importance protein plays in giving your body energy and keeping your stomach satisfied, but did you know how many sources other than meat protein is found? Try these alternatives and add some variety to your diet!
Soy Bean Protein: As close to meat protein as it is possible to obtain from plant sources in regards to completeness.
Nuts: Eat them out of the shell or in nut butter forms (yum!). A great source of essential unsaturated fatty acids, as well as many vitamins and minerals that work with protein for cellular rebuilding.
Wheat Germ: A natural source of good plant protein.
Seeds: Give sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, or pumpkin seeds a try for a protein packed snack, mix them into your salad for an added crunch, or add it to your favorite breakfast cereal and give your morning an energy boost!
Grains: All grains, like other seeds, are a good source of high quality protein. These sources are de-fatted: corn germ, wheat germ, brown rice, wheat gluten, whole nuts, barley, whole corn, whole rye, buckwheat, flour, and millet. Millet is almost perfect in its amino acid balance. Buckwheat is considered a master plant protein source (groats and kasha).
Legumes: This category includes a variety of beans, peas, and foods made from them. A variety of legumes and sprouts will offer high grade protein utilization needed for balance to help boost the body's overall rejuvenation.

11 Tips for a Safe, Happy Fourth of July
All of us at West Loop Chiropractic hope you all have a very fun, safe 4th of July today! Please see the article posted below for reminders how how to celebrate safely with your loved ones on this holiday.

Also, a friendly reminder we will resume normal office hours tomorrow, July 5th. If you need to schedule your next appointment, call 312.850.2225 or send an email to adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com.
Medical Author: Melissa Conrad Stöppler, MD Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR
- Be a safe swimmer. Water sports and fireworks are two of the biggest pastimes for Fourth of July celebrations, and these are both linked to numerous deaths and injuries each year. Never swim alone, and make sure that kids' water play is adequately supervised at all times. Many drownings occur when parents and other adults are nearby, so always have a designated chaperon for water play and don't assume that others are watching the kids. Statistics show that most young children who drown in pools have been out of sight for less than five minutes.
- If fireworks are legal in your community and are a part of your celebration, be sure to store and use them safely. Keep the kids away from the fireworks at all times, and keep spectators at a safe distance. Attending fireworks displays organized by professionals is always safer than trying to put on your own show.
- Use alcohol responsibly. Alcohol and fireworks can be a hazardous and dangerous combination. Also, have a designated driver to bring party-goers home from the festivities. Remember also that alcohol and swimming can be as dangerous as drinking and driving.
- Lakes, waterways, and seas will be crowded with boats. Review safe boating practices, and don't drink and drive your boat. Alcohol consumption while operating boats or other motorized water vessels is illegal, and you can be arrested for a BWI (boating under the influence!). Be sure that you have an adequate number of life preservers on hand for extra guests. Become familiar with the boating laws in your area.
- Cover food and beverages outdoors to discourage bees and wasps from attending your party. If someone is allergic to insect stings, you should have an emergency anaphylaxis kit on hand. Wearing shoes, long sleeves, and long pants outdoors and avoiding fragranced body products, bright colors, and sugary drinks can also help prevent bee stings.
- Apply sunscreen both before and during an outdoor party. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause both premature aging and skin cancer in the long term, and a painful burn the next day. Even those with darker skin should use a sunscreen with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15, according to recommendations from the American Academy of Dermatology.
- Check prescription medications you are taking to assure you will not have a sun-sensitizing drug reaction to the medication.
- If you'll be hiking or camping in an area where ticks are abundant, wear long-sleeved, light-colored shirts and long pants tucked into socks or boots to protect yourself from tick-borne diseases. For your skin, you can use a tick repellent with no more than 30% DEET according to the manufacturer's instructions. Products containing DEET should not be used on children less than 2 months of age and should not be applied to the hands or face of young children. Check yourself (and your pets) for ticks at the end of the day.
- Spend adequate time indoors or in the shade and drink plenty of fluids to avoid heat illness in extremely hot climates. The risk of heat illness is increased when participating in strenuous activity or sports, and those with chronic medical conditions and the elderly are also at an increased risk of heat exhaustion and/or heat stroke. Alcohol consumption can also promote dehydration and increase the risk.
- Keep children away from campfires and grills. Gas leaks, blocked tubes, and overfilled propane tanks can be a cause of grill fires and explosions.
- Don't leave the picnic spread out all day. Allowing food to sit in outdoor temperatures can invite food-borne illness. The U.S. FDA suggests never leaving food out for more than one hour when the temperature is above 90 F and not more than two hours at other times. Foods that need to be kept cold should be placed in a cooler with plenty of ice or freezing packs and held at a maximum temperature of 40 F. While mayonnaise and other egg dishes are often associated with food poisoning, any food can potentially become contaminated. Adequate hand washing and food preparation can also help prevent food poisoning.

Dr. Rosen's Wellness Tip
Wellness Chiropractic holds forth the notion that your body is the true healer, not the doctor. Chiropractic care facilitates your healing force, but it's your body that does the healing. Understanding simple wellness principles will help you understand how chiropractic frees your body to heal itself. There are two simples wellness laws that you can't violate in order to stay well.
1. Your nervous system must be free from interference. Your central nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system of the body. You must keep it functioning at 100% to maintain function and health. When a wellness chiropractor removes the interference in the nervous system, it allows the tissues, cells, and organs to function properly and heal from within.
2. Your body must be free to heal itself from within. Your body is a self-healing organism and has the ability to heal itself naturally from within, as long as there is no interference. True healing comes from within. When you take drugs or have surgery, you are trying to gain health from an outside source agent. You are forcing the body against its will and there are always consequences, which we call side effects. Adding chemicals to your body only adds additional interference to its natural ability to function and heal. Free your body from outside chemical, physical, and emotional interference to allow your body to heal naturally.
We are not saying never use drugs. There are times when drugs may be necessary, but there are consequences. WE want o you to practice wellness first; drugs and surgery should be a last resort.

You'll Never Lack the Sun's Rays Again-Get Your Vitamin D Now!
Vitamin D-- The best way to make sure you don't end up with too much or too little vitamin D is to produce it in your own body, by getting some exposure to beneficial ultraviolet A and B rays, like those produced by the sun. The UVB rays from the sun help your skin to produce up to 80% of the vitamin D in your body.
But for many of you, getting ample sunlight just isn't an option. You have busy lives that don't allow for getting outdoors a lot, much less sunbathing. And depending upon where you live, it could be cold out, raining out, or cloudy for weeks on end. Your vitamin D levels can drop as much as 50% in the winter.... you get the idea.
Great news! Now you can get the sun’s beneficial energy in the most convenient place of all – West Loop Chiropractic with the SunSplash Refresh Vitamin D producing Tanning System. With the SunSplash Refresh, you not only get the vitamin D producing rays, but also the ability to help your facial skin gain a more healthful appearance and get a great-looking tan at the same time.
Call or email today to schedule your next appointment - 312.850.2225 or adjustme@westloopchiropractic.com

10 Ways to Get More Veggies
Vegetables are a vital part of a well-balanced diet and do far more than help you to manage a healthy weight - can reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, and some cancers. Here are some ideas from the folks at Take Off Pounds Sensibly, a nonprofit weight-loss support group, to help you get more of these good for you foods into your diet:
1. Make a "pasta" dish with spaghetti squash instead of noodles.
2. Puree cooked veggies and add them to stews, gravies, and soups.
3. Add shredded carrots to muffins or bread.
4. Add raw spinach leaves and an extra-ripe banana to a fruit smoothie. It sounds bizarre, I know, but the sweetness of the banana helps mask the taste of the spinach.
5. Add better-for-you choices like onions, mushrooms, and peppers to your morning omelet instead of your usual meat and cheese. Prepping your vegetables the night before will help you make a better choice and will save you time in the morning.
6. Try mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. Experiment with spices and different flavorings such as garlic or a bit of Parmesan cheese.
7. Add extra veggies to casseroles, meatloaf, hamburgers, and sauces.
8. Use salsa instead of other condiments or dips.
9. Opt for the whole fruit instead of jellies or jams on your toast or peanut butter sandwiches.
10. Cut up vegetables always make a great, healthy snack choice, so be sure to keep fresh baby carrots, celery, and sugar snap peas towards the front of your fridge so you see them first when looking for a snack.

It's important to make an overall commitment to healthy, restorative sleep. Here are some tips from the Better Sleep Council for maintaining a healthy sleep cycle and ensuring the best night's rest:
- Make sleep a priority by keeping a consistent sleep (bedtime) and wake schedule, including the weekends.
- Create a bedtime routine that is relaxing. Experts recommend reading a book, listening to soothing music or soaking in a hot bath.
- Transform your bedroom into a haven of comfort. Create a room that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool for the best possible sleep.
- Evaluate your mattress and pillow to ensure proper comfort and support. If your mattress is five to seven years old, it may be time for a new one. In general, pillows should be replaced every year.
- Keep work materials, computers and televisions out of the bedroom; it should be used for sleep and sex only.
- Exercise regularly, but complete workouts at least two hours before bedtime.
- If you sleep with a partner, your mattress should allow each of you enough space to move easily. Couples who've been sleeping on a "double" (full size) may think they have enough room, until they learn that each person has only as much sleeping space as a baby's crib!
- Avoid nicotine (e.g., cigarettes, tobacco products). Used close to bedtime, it can lead to poor sleep.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol (e.g., coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate) close to bedtime. It can keep you awake.
- Finish eating at least two to three hours before bedtime.

Good-for-You Grains
Forget plain, boring white rice! These healthier options not only taste better, they pack a serious nutritional punch. Try something new and start "reaping" their wholesome benefits!
Quinoa: This grain is rich in magnesium, a mineral that helps relax constricted blood vessels which can cause headaches and migraines. The mild, nutty flavor of quinoa tastes great in soups or salads. Be sure to rinse it well before cooking.
Black Rice: Brown rice is SO last season! This "forbidden rice," once only eaten by Chinese nobles, can help soothe inflammation associated with allergies and asthma. Try substituting black rice for white in rice pudding for a healthier, delicious dessert.
Amaranth: Considered sacred by the Aztecs, this grain contains high amounts of lysine, an amino acid that Italian researchers have found can help women absorb calcium more efficiently. Amaranth is a great popcorn alternative - just prepare in a covered saucepan over medium heat. No oil necessary!
Bulgur (A.K.A. Cracked Wheat): Easily the superstar of grains with 8 grams of fiber and 0 grams of fat, bulgur is available in several grades from fine to extra-coarse. Use coarser grades in casseroles and soups. Prepare and add finer grades to yogurt for a quick breakfast, or use it as a satisfying side-dish at dinner.

The Hazards of Painkillers
On Thursday the FDA announced that they were restricting the strength of several popular prescription painkillers, such as Percocet and Vicodin, in an effort to prevent people from suffering severe liver damage from overdosing on one of its main ingredients, Acetaminophen. FDA's Sandra Kweder said in a statement, "Overdose from prescription combination products containing acetaminophen account for nearly half of all cases of acetaminophen-related liver failure in the United States, many of which result in liver transplant or death." New Year's Day Superstitions
All of us at West Loop Chiropractic hope you are having a wonderful new year so far. To help you celebrate, we thought we'd share some interesting, fun, perhaps little known superstitions of new year's day. Enjoy, and we wish you a happy, safe, and prosperous 2011!
Wear New Clothes
Wearing new clothes on New Year's Day indicates that you will receive more new garments during the year. Red clothing is preferred for New Year's Day since red is considered a happy color and is sure to attract a brighter future for its wearer.
Avoid Crying
It is said that one should avoid breaking things or crying and wailing on the first day of the year if you don't want that to be a pattern for the entire year.
Lucky New Year Babies
Babies born on January 1st are said to be the luckiest of all with that luck continuing throughout their lives. Happy Birthday!
Don't Let Money Leave the House
In several countries, people do not let money, jewelry, precious items or other invaluable things leave home on New Year Day. Hence it is said that one should not pay loans and bills or lend things to anybody. People go to the extent of not taking out garbage or even not dusting their carpets on this day to ensure that nothing goes out of home during the year. If you have to deliver presents on New Year morning, it is advised to leave them in the car since New Year's Eve on December 31st. In case you must take something out from the home, let someone come with the present inside the home first.
Letting the Old Year Out
At midnight, all the doors of a house must be opened to let the old year escape unimpeded.
Stack Up Cupboards and Wallets
It is believed that cupboards stocked up with food and wallets and purses full of money bring prosperity in New Year. Similarly, empty pockets or empty cupboards on New Years Eve portend a year of poverty.
Do Not Wash Dishes
In several societies washing dishes and doing laundry on New Year's day is said to lead to a death in the family during the year. Many people do not even wash hair on New Year's day.
Do Token Amount of Work
It is said that one must do a token amount of work on the New Year's Day. This is said to ensure advancement in career. Starting work on a serious work project is unlucky on New Year's Day.
Make Noise
People believe that the Evil One and his attendants and servants hate din and loud noise. Scare them away by being as loud in New Year celebrations as possible. Church bells are rung at midnight for the same reason.
Don't Keep Debts
Pay your bills and loans before New Year's Eve so you don't have any debt left for the New Year.
Eat Black-Eyes Peas
In the Southern part of the United States it is said that eating of black-eyed peas on New Year's Day will attract both general good luck and money.
Kiss at Midnight
It is believed that kissing at midnight ensures that affections and ties will continue throughout the New Year. On similar lines, it is said, to not do this would be to set the stage for a year of coldness.
First Footing
One must never leave the home before someone comes in first. First footer in the house should be ushered in with a warm welcome and should not have flat feet, cross-eyes or a unibrow.
The Direction of Wind
The direction of wind during sunrise on New Year morning prophesies about the coming year. Wind from south foretells fine weather and prosperous times ahead while wind from north foretells bad weather. Wind blowing from east foretells natural calamities and wind from west foretells plenty of milk and fish for all but death of a person of great national importance. No wind means joy and prosperity throughout the year.
Dance in the Open Air
To dance in the open air, especially around a tree, on New Year's Day ensures luck in love and prosperity and freedom from ill health during the coming twelve months.
Find Future Groom
On New Year's Day if, upon rising, a girl should look out of her bedroom window and see a man passing by, she may reckon to be married before the year is finished.
Drain the Bottle
You could ensure yourself good fortune by draining the last dregs from a bottle of drink on New Year's Eve!
