Stress Busters!

Working overtime. Traffic jams. Family obligations. Over-stuffed schedules for you, your significant other and the kids. Add in the lingering winter's gloomy skies and there's enough stress to go around to make even the most good-natured person feel at his or her wit's end.
But there is hope! Here are some ways to fight the stress in your life, bringing a greater sense of peace and tranquility into your day.

1) Go With the Flow - Practicing simple breathing and relaxation techniques along with regular yoga classes can help in your ability to let the little things go. West Loop Chiropractic offers free lunchtime yoga in our office from 12-1 p.m. every Monday with Chicago yogi, Suzanne Ko. Mats are provided and no registration or prior experience is required. It is recommended you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. See you there!

2) Work it Out! - We all know that working out is a great way to lose weight, get strong, and improve flexibility. Did you also know that it's a great stress-fighter? Get active by taking a walk, checking out a new workout DVD or group fitness class at your gym, or treat yourself to a personal training session - you'll forget your woes in no time!

3) Get Adjusted - Routine chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy keep your nerves functioning at their optimal level, reducing your likelihood for illness or fatigue. You'll Never Lack the Sun's Rays Again-Get Your Vitamin D Now!

Vitamin D-- The best way to make sure you don't end up with too much or too little vitamin D is to produce it in your own body, by getting some exposure to beneficial ultraviolet A and B rays, like those produced by the sun. The UVB rays from the sun help your skin to produce up to 80% of the vitamin D in your body.
But for many of you, getting ample sunlight just isn't an option. You have busy lives that don't allow for getting outdoors a lot, much less sunbathing. And depending upon where you live, it could be cold out, raining out, or cloudy for weeks on end. Your vitamin D levels can drop as much as 50% in the winter.... you get the idea.
Great news! Now you can get the sun’s beneficial energy in the most convenient place of all – West Loop Chiropractic with the SunSplash Refresh Vitamin D producing Tanning System. With the SunSplash Refresh, you not only get the vitamin D producing rays, but also the ability to help your facial skin gain a more healthful appearance and get a great-looking tan at the same time.

10 Ways to Get More Veggies

Vegetables are a vital part of a well-balanced diet and do far more than help you to manage a healthy weight - can reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, and some cancers. Here are some ideas from the folks at Take Off Pounds Sensibly, a nonprofit weight-loss support group, to help you get more of these good for you foods into your diet:

1. Make a "pasta" dish with spaghetti squash instead of noodles.

2. Puree cooked veggies and add them to stews, gravies, and soups.

3. Add shredded carrots to muffins or bread.

4. Add raw spinach leaves and an extra-ripe banana to a fruit smoothie. It sounds bizarre, I know, but the sweetness of the banana helps mask the taste of the spinach.

5. Add better-for-you choices like onions, mushrooms, and peppers to your morning omelet instead of your usual meat and cheese. Prepping your vegetables the night before will help you make a better choice and will save you time in the morning.

6. Try mashed cauliflower instead of mashed potatoes. Experiment with spices and different flavorings such as garlic or a bit of Parmesan cheese.

7. Add extra veggies to casseroles, meatloaf, hamburgers, and sauces.

8. Use salsa instead of other condiments or dips.

9. Opt for the whole fruit instead of jellies or jams on your toast or peanut butter sandwiches.

10. Cut up vegetables always make a great, healthy snack choice, so be sure to keep fresh baby carrots, celery, and sugar snap peas towards the front of your fridge so you see them first when looking for a snack.
